The Istituto di Scienza e Tecnologie dell'Informazione (ISTI) of the National Research Council of Italy (CNR) and the Dipartimento di Medicina Traslazionale (DMT) of the University of Eastern Piedmont "Amedeo Avogadro" have reached an agreement concerning research and development activities oriented an automatic detection of mandibular movements, in order to study in depth mandibular cinematic for the diagnosis of Temporo-Mandibular Disorders (TMD). During the first year of the agreement attention has been focused on the development of an innovative research model. In particular, we aimed to compare the results obtained by using devices currently used for this kind of examination to those provided by different motion detection sensors; we were also intended to use image processing and information visualization procedures. The report describes a preliminary activity in which we developed new software procedures in order to use in the proposed study a system for motion detection by image processing, previously realized at ISTI.
