Anyone who ploughs the sea for work or passion can report the presence of oil spills through ARGO Sentinel, a mobile application developed by the Institute of Science and Information Technology (ISTI) of CNR in Pisa, freely downloadable from Google Play at http://tinyurl.com/argosentinel. Thanks to this technology, who sights oil spills may quickly and easily signal with his own smartphone. The app provides two buttons and a message area to report and describe oil spills. The GPS automatically provides the coordinates. The signals sent using the application are transmitted to a Marine Information System, developed by ISTI, able to analyze and integrate mathematical models forecasting the evolution of pollution from data collected using various technologies such as satellites, sensored autonomous underwater vehicles, buoys providing meteorological and sea parameters, electronic noses, and automatic ships identification.
