Digital Libraries: supporting Open Science

The Italian Research Conference on Digital Libraries (IRCDL) is the annual Italian forum to discuss research topics on Digital Libraries and related technical, practical, and social issues. Along the years, IRCDL touched several aspects underlying the "Digital Library" domain and promptly adapted to the evolution of the field. Today, the "Digital Library" field includes theory and practices reflecting the evolution of the role of libraries in the scholarly communication domain, and also embracing scholarly communication and open science.The theme of IRCDL 2019 was "Digital Libraries: Supporting Open Science". Three main reasons motivated this theme: (i) science is increasingly becoming digital, meaning that research is performed using data services and digital tools; (ii) the results of the research are no longer just traditional scientific publications; (iii) the outcomes of science are increasingly encompassing datasets, software, and experiments. As digital artefacts, such products can be shared and re-used together with the article, thus enabling comprehensive research assessment and various degrees of reproducibility of science. Positive consequences of this shift towards open Science are: accelerating science, optimizing the cost of research, fraud detection, and fully-fledged scientific reward. Digital Libraries are central in the evolution of research outputs by target-ing findability, preservation, interlinking, and re-use of research products and by integrating the components of the scholarly communication processSource: SIGMOD record (Online) 48 (2019): 54–57.

Open Science e finanziamenti europei: come ottemperare agli obblighi nei progetti H2020 e in Horizon Europe

Da tempo la Commissione Europea ha abbracciato l'Open Science e la sua visione partecipativa e collaborativa del lavoro scientifico. Tutti i beneficiari di fondi europei per la ricerca sono tenuti a rispettare le richieste in fatto di Open Access alle pubblicazioni, ai dati o ad altri prodotti del lavoro di ricerca. In concreto rendere disponibili i prodotti della ricerca significa fare scelte ponderate, saper distinguere le alternative disponibili e gli strumenti da usare. Nonché conoscere le motivazioni che guidano la scelta di un modello aperto e trasparente di comunicazione scientifica tra pari. Il National Open Access Desk di OpenAIRE per l'Italia ha organizzato, in collaborazione con il Competence Center di ICDI, un corso indirizzato ai coordinatori di progetti H2020 e Horizon Europe, in cui sono state approfondite tutte le principali questioni su Open Science e Open Access legate ai finanziamenti europei. Il corso è stato articolato in un ciclo di 4 webinar, svolti a febbraio 2021. In ciascuna lezione stato previsto uno spazio per la discussione e per rispondere alle domande dei partecipanti. Da tempo la Commissione Europea ha abbracciato l'Open Science e la sua visione partecipativa e collaborativa del lavoro scientifico. Tutti i beneficiari di fondi europei per la ricerca sono tenuti a rispettare le richieste in fatto di Open Access alle pubblicazioni, ai dati o ad altri prodotti del lavoro di ricerca. In concreto rendere disponibili i prodotti della ricerca significa fare scelte ponderate, saper distinguere le alternative disponibili e gli strumenti da usare. Nonché conoscere le motivazioni che guidano la scelta di un modello aperto e trasparente di comunicazione scientifica tra pari. Il National Open Access Desk di OpenAIRE per l'Italia ha organizzato, in collaborazione con il Competence Center di ICDI, un corso indirizzato ai coordinatori di progetti H2020 e Horizon Europe, in cui sono state approfondite tutte le principali questioni su Open Science e Open Access legate ai finanziamenti europei. Il corso è stato articolato in un ciclo di 4 webinar, svolti a febbraio 2021. In ciascuna lezione stato previsto uno spazio per la discussione e per rispondere alle domande dei partecipanti. This document presents the mission and strategy of the Italian Competence Centre on Open Science, FAIR, and EOSC. The Competence Centre is an initiative born within the Italian Computing and Data Infrastructure (ICDI), a forum created by representatives of major Italian Research Infrastructures and e-Infrastructures, with the aim of promoting sinergies at the national level, and optimising the Italian participation to European and global challenges in this field, including the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC), the European Data Infrastructure (EDI) and HPC. This working paper depicts the mission and objectives of the ICDI Competence Centre, a network of experts with various skills and competences that are supporting the national stakeholders on topics related to Open Science, FAIR principles application and participation to the EOSC. The different actors and roles are described in the document as well as the activities and services offered, and the added value each stakeholder can find the in Competence Centre. The tools and services provided, in particular the concept for the portal, though which the Centre will connect to the national landscape and users, are also presented. The OpenAIRE Research Community Dashboard: On Blending Scientific Workflows and Scientific Publishing

Despite the hype, the effective implementation of Open Science is hindered by several cultural and technical barriers. Researchers embraced digital science, use "digital laboratories" (e.g. research infrastructures, thematic services) to conduct their research and publish research data, but practices and tools are still far from achieving the expectations of transparency and reproducibility of Open Science. The places where science is performed and the places where science is published are still regarded as different realms. Publishing is still a post-experimental, tedious, manual process, too often limited to articles, in some contexts semantically linked to datasets, rarely to software, generally disregarding digital representations of experiments. In this work we present the OpenAIRE Research Community Dashboard (RCD), designed to overcome some of these barriers for a given research community, minimizing the technical efforts and without renouncing any of the community services or practices. The RCD flanks digital laboratories of research communities with scholarly communication tools for discovering and publishing interlinked scientific products such as literature, datasets, and software.
