On upper bounds for dynamic pruning
Tonellotto Nicola, Ounis Iadh, Macdonald Craig
Dynamic pruning strategies enhance the efficiency of search engines, by making use of term upper bounds to decide when a document will not make the final set of k retrieved documents. After discussing different approaches for obtaining term upper bounds, we propose the use of multiple least upper bounds. Experiments are conducted on the TREC ClueWeb09 corpus, to measure the accuracy of different upper bounds.Source: Advances in Information Retrieval Theory. Behavioural skeletons for component autonomic management on grids
Dazzi P., Laforenza D., Tonellotto N., Aldinucci M., Campa S., Danelutto M., Kilpatrick P.
We present behavioural skeletons for the CoreGrid Component Model, which are an abstraction aimed at simplifying the development of GCMbased self-management applications. Behavioural skeletons abstract component self-man-agent in component-based design as design patterns abstract class design in classic OO development. As here we just want to introduce the behavioural skeleton framework, emphasis is placed on general skeleton structure rather than on their autonomic management policies.Source: ISTI Technical reports, 2007

Representing document lengths with identifiers
Tonellotto Nicola, Silvestri Fabrizio, Perego Raffaele
The length of each indexed document is needed by most common text retrieval scoring functions to rank it with respect to the current query. For efficiency purposes information retrieval systems maintain this information in the main memory. This paper proposes a novel strategy to encode the length of each document directly in the document identifier, thus reducing main memory demand. The technique is based on a simple document identifier assignment method and a function allowing the emph{approximate} length of each indexed document to be computed analytically. The paper discusses the implication of the adoption of the proposed technique, and the encouraging results of the experiments conducted with the 2009 TREC Web Track dataset.Source: Advances in Information Retrieval. 33rd European Conference on IR Research, ECIR 2011, pp. 665–669, Dublin, Ireland, 18-21 April 2011

Modeling stream communications in component-based applications
Tonellotto N., Danelutto M., Vanneschi M., Laforenza D., Zoccolo C.
Component technology is a promising approach to develop Grid applications, allowing to design very complex applications by hierarchical composition of basic components. Nevertheless, component applications on Grids have complex deployment models. Performance-sensitive decisions should be taken by automatic tools, matching developer knowledge about component performance with QoS requirements on the applications, in order to find deployment plans that satisfy a Service Level Agreement (SLA). This paper presents a steady-state performance model for component-based applications with stream communication semantics. The model strictly adheres to the hierarchical nature of component-based applications, and is of practical use in launch-time decisions.Source: Scalable Computing. How to run scientific applications over web services
Puppin D., Laforenza D., Tonellotto N.
MPI is a de facto standard for high performance numerical applications on parallel machines: it is available, in a variety of implementations, for a range of architectures, ranging from supercomputers to clusters of workstations. Nonetheless, with the growing demand for distributed, heterogeneous and Grid computing, developers are hitting some of its limitations: e.g. security is not addressed, and geographically distributed machines are difficult to connect. In this work, we give an example of a parallel application, implemented with the use of Web Services. Web Services represent an emerging standard to offer computational services over the Internet. While this solution does not reach the same performance of MPI, it offers a series of advantages: high availability, rapid design, extreme heterogeneity.Source: International Conference on Parallel Processing. Managing user expectations with component performance contracts
Tonellotto N., Laforenza D., Coppola M., Zoccolo C., Danelutto M., Vanneschi M.
In this paper we introduce a definition of performance contract for hierarchical component applications communicating through one-way asynchronous communications. Component annotations allow to express a generic performance model, performance requirements and resource constraints. We propose an $O(n. 3.5})$ algorithm to obtain from user expectations the minimum resource requirements which ensure the desired QoS, to be exploited successively in a SLA negotiation phase. The technique is suitable for automatic execution, exploiting developer-provided annotations, and is validated with experiments on heterogeneous grid platforms.Source: CoreGRID Workshop on Usage of Service Level Agreements in Grids, pp. 349–358, Austin, Texas, USA, 19 Settembre 2007
