The English-language version of the Manual, presented in an expanded edition in March 2026, represents an update of the volume with two appendices that are part of the institutional series of Policy Briefs of the Department of Human and Social Sciences, Cultural Heritage (DSU) of the National Research Council (CNR). This new edition, in addition to gathering the salient aspects of "universal design," starting from the concept of the functioning of individuals to the functioning of cultural places, presents additional current aspects through documents that summarize the results of research on relevant topics and their implications for policy and social debate. In the first addendum, the choice was to explore the issues of appropriate, respectful, and correct language regarding accessibility based on Legislative Decree 62/2024, centered on a "Person First" vision, as enshrined by the World Health Organization (2001) and the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (2006). The second document proposes an integrated approach to accessible trails, understood as landscape experiences to be enjoyed independently and safely, capable of meeting the needs of each individual

A systematic survey on image description techniques for STEM domains
Cardia Marco, Angileri Letizia, Buzzi Marina, Galesi Giulio, Leporini Barbara
The proliferation of visual data in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) presents accessibility barriers for blind and low-vision users. While Artificial Intelligence (AI) can generate alternative descriptions of STEM images, research remains fragmented and pratical impact is limited. This systematic survey examines 20 peer-reviewed studies on AI-based STEM visual description, focusing on accessibility and Human–Computer Interaction (HCI). Following PRISMA methodology and a ROBIS-based risk-of-bias assessment, the review analyzes (i) STEM visuals targeted, (ii) AI architectures employed, (iii) datasets and evaluation metrics, and (iv) interaction modalities for delivering descriptions. Findings show a shift from static alt-text toward interactive, multimodal systems integrating conversational interfaces, keyboard navigation, audio, and haptic feedback. However, challenges persist, including hallucinations, limited accessibility-first datasets co-designed with BLV users, and overreliance on automatic text-overlap metrics. The survey identifies future HCI priorities: user-controlled verbosity, explainable AI pipelines, and integration of accessible description into mainstream STEM environments.Source: INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF HUMAN-COMPUTER INTERACTION, pp. 1-29

Is Generative AI mature for alternative image descriptions of STEM content?
Buzzi M., Galesi G., Leporini B., Nicotera A.
Alternative descriptions of digital images have always been an accessibility issue for screen reader users. Over time, numerous guidelines have been proposed in the literature, but the problem still exists. Recently, artificial intelligence (AI) has been introduced in digital applications to support visually impaired people in getting information about the world around them. In this way, such applications become a digital assistant for people with visual impairments. Increasingly, generative AI is being exploited to create accessible content for visually impaired people. In the education field, image description can play a crucial role in understanding even scientific content. For this reason, alternative descriptions should be accurate and educational-oriented. In this work, we investigate whether existing AI-based tools on the market are mature for describing images related to scientific content. Five AI-based tools were used to test the generated descriptions of four STEM images chosen for this preliminary study. Results indicate that answers are prompt and context dependent, and this technology can certainly support blind people in everyday tasks; but for STEM educational content more effort is required for delivering accessible and effective descriptions, supporting students in satisfying and accurate image exploration.DOI: 10.5220/0012996800003825

Galesi G., Vozna A., Leporini B.

Leporini B, Galesi G, Vozna A

An intelligent platform of services based on multimedia understanding and telehealth for supporting the management of SARS-CoV-2 multi-pathological patients
Ignesti G., Bruno A., Deri C., D'Angelo G., Bastiani L., Pratali L., Memmini S., Cicalini D., Dini A., Galesi G., Pardini F., Tampucci M., Benassi A., Salvetti O., Moroni D., Martinelli M.
The combination of pervasive sensing and multimedia understanding with the advances in communications makes it possible to conceive platforms of services for providing telehealth solutions responding to the current needs of society. The recent outbreak has indeed posed several concerns on the management of patients at home, urging to devise complex pathways to address the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in combination with the usual diseases of an increasingly elder population. In this paper, we present TiAssisto, a project aiming to design, develop, and validate an innovative and intelligent platform of services, having as its main objective to assist both Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) multi-pathological patients and healthcare professionals. This is achieved by researching and validating new methods to improve their lives and reduce avoidable hospitalisations. TiAssisto features telehealth and telemedicine solutions to enable high-quality standards treatments based on Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML). Three hundred patients are involvedin our study: one half using our telehealth platform, while the other half participate as a control group for a correct validation. The developed AI models and the Decision Support System assist General Practitioners (GPs) and other healthcare professionals in order to help them in their diagnosis, by providing suggestions and pointing out possible presence or absence of signs that can be related to pathologies. Deep learning techniques are also used to detect the absence or presence of specific signs in lung ultrasound images.DOI: 10.1109/sitis57111.2022.00089

Leporini B, Paratore Mt, Vozna A, Galesi G, Frediani L, Mariotti M

Leporini B, Paratore Mt, Vozna A, Galesi G, Frediani L, Mariotti M
