Telemedicine

In this paper we present the HUMAN (Health throUgh teleMAtics for Inmates) Project that aims to develop an innovative umbrella of health services in detention environments in order to improve the inmates' healthcare provision and to provide an efficient, effective and secure support to the everyday activity of the medical staff. A Web-enabled Decision support system has been designed in order to overcome the problems related to the large amount of clinical data to be managed for each inmate, which usually implies an inadequate and discontinuous healthcare provision. The decision support system has been integrated with smart environments (prison cells), tailored on the health requirements of inmates with special needs, such as disabled or elderly persons. Furthermore interoperability and security aspects have been accurately analysed and faced. The first results obtained show the positive impact of these ICT services for the Prison environment and the entire society and the effectiveness of the approach proposed. The modules developed are implemented for validation in two European detention structures.
