Information Systems  Environmental Monitoring  H.2.8 Database Applications

The ability to remotely detect and monitor oil spills at sea is becoming increasingly important due to the high demand of oilbased products. As a consequence, shipping routes are becoming very crowded by increasing the risk of oil slicks. In this frame, an integrated system based on remote sensing from various electronic sensors (SAR, hyperspectral, thermal, chemical/ physical, environmental, etc.) has been designed. This system, integrated and interoperable, represents a valuable monitoring tool for environmental emergency intervention, based on geopositioning tools and an ad-hoc communication infrastructure. The model is capable of transferring detected data seamlessly between different components of the information system (and their users), and to extract new knowledge from these. In this way, different data are gathered, in a consistent and usable form, in order to facilitate dynamic links between different models and analytical processes, which are required for environmental monitoring.
