Although part of a single cultural universe, archives and libraries have long lived without establishing a real dialogue and an effective cooperation. The automa-tion of processes, contents and services, before, and Internet and the Web, af-terwards, have provided new opportunities and new means to achieve common goals. Therefore, the intentions and the attitudes have changed, favoring the progressive mental and cultural opening of both the communities. The current relations between archives and libraries and the creation of the MAB, the first organization of a political and institutional nature, could really start a new phase of collaboration. The work traces some milestones of the conceptual paths car-ried out by the two institutions, in parallel to the evolution of the processes of standardization and automation.
