Distributed databases Distributed systems
The present technology makes available tools for geographical data handling and archiving that were largely used by professionals, consequently large amounts of digital data are today available. The diffusion of the Internet, together with the continuous growth of transmission speed and the availability of powerful compression techniques, enable the diffusion of those data to an extremely large user population. These technological items give satisfying answers to the increasing request for geographical information, coming from many different sources, also from areas traditionally far from GIS technology. Complete environments to develop and manage applications for distribution via WWW of geographical data aren't yet available, so ad hoc programming is required as well as an accurate design taking into account data organization, interaction between GIS and WWW, software packages both on server and client side (to integrate the browser capabilities). This article contains a description of most common problems encountered in developing a system for geographical data distribution (Geo-Data Server) and describes the solution adopted for the Geo-Data Server of Serchio river Basin Authority.
