Gli operatori sanitari come produttori/editori dell'informazione: la biblioteca digitale ETRDL, un possibile modello per la biomedicina?

Il settore delle biblioteche digitali è un settore emergente con una notevole attività di ricerca e sviluppo, sia a livello italiano che europeo, testimoniata anche dalla presenza di importanti progetti nazionali e dai consistenti finanziamenti comunitari che a questo settore sono destinati. Le biblioteche digitali sono uno strumento di comunicazione globale, risultato dei mutamenti in corso nelle tecnologie, nei processi di produzione, diffusione e ricerca dell'informazione; nel prossimo futuro le tecnologie delle biblioteche digitali porteranno trasformazioni in moltissimi campi dell'attività umana. Uno di questi e' il campo della divulgazione della documentazione scientifica. Nella comunicazione verra' descritta l'infrastruttura di biblioteca digitale ETRDL (ERCIM Technical Reference Digital Library). ETRDL/Dienst è un sistema distribuito per la gestione di biblioteche digitali sviluppato presso l'IEI (ora ISTI) attraverso l'estensione delle funzionalità del sistema Dienst (Cornell University). ETRDL implementa i "tradizionali" servizi di ricerca e recupero di documenti elettronici e un servizio di "self-publishing" di nuova concezione: infatti questo servizio, con le sue funzioni di Produzione, Organizzazione e Accesso alla documentazione, gestite direttamente dagli autori e dalle loro Istituzioni, realizza un modello alternativo di editoria, chiamata appunto "self-publishing". I suoi vantaggi vanno dalla riduzione dei tempi di revisione/pubblicazione dei documenti alla riduzione dei costi di pubblicazione/diffusione. Assisting scientists to make their research results world wide freely available: an experience begun in the 90s

The aim of the ERCIM 'Digital Library Initiative' was to promote the development of digital library technology in Europe. Towards the end of 1997, ERCIM decided to set its own digital library up to provide open access to grey literature: the ERCIM Technical Reference Digital Library (ETRDL). The aim of ETRDL was to assist ERCIM scientists to make their research results world wide immediately available, and provide them with appropriate on-line facilities in order to access the technical documentation by others researchers working in the same field. The prototype was implemented as part of NCSTRL (the US Networked Computer Science Technical Reference Library, developed by the Cornell University) extending the Dienst system, to meet the requirements of the European IT scientific community. In 1998 pilot server sites were set up at more than half of the 14 ERCIM national labs. Personalized instances have been developed for the marine biology area of science: LVDL - Laguna of Venice DL and MeCME - Mediterranean Costal Marine Environment DL-IAMC-CNR. While ETRDL repositories remain unchanged, applications will be managed by the new software system OpenDlib, developed at ISTI-CNR, supporting advanced functionalities and the OAI protocol. Lo scopo di questa presentazione è quello di illustrare i) come è stato realizzato un ciclo gestionale completo dell'informazione: dall'inserimento dei metadati e dei documenti digitali alla restituzione degli stessi all'utente finale; ii) come sono stata resa accessibile via web, a livelli diversi e secondo viste diverse l'informazione prodotta; iii) come siano stati creati servizi differenti utilizzando gli stessi oggetti. The Publication Management System (PUMA) is one of the major software component made available by the CNR Portal Of Libraries And Repositories (POLAR) that provides CNR librarians and researchers with services for managing libraries and accessing information. PUMA also constitutes the first step towards creating the Italian network of CNR Institutional repositories, looking at the DRIVER vision, i.e., building an infrastructure that allows European Research Institutions to share content and functionality. The ERCIM Technical Reference Digital Library service (ETRDL) was promoted by the European Research Consortium for Informatics and Mathematics (ERCIM) with the aim of managing grey literature produced by scientists working in the areas of information science and applied mathematics, making their research results immediately world wide available and also building a test-bed for their research activities. In this paper ETRDL is described and its future development presented. Section 1 traces the history of ETRDL from its conceptualization to the first experimental service given by the early ETRDL prototype. This was implemented to satisfy the requirements of the European IT scientific community, although realized as a part of NCSTRL (the US Networked Computer Science Technical Reference Library). Section 2 describes how further developments made ETRDL a system presently capable to manage DLs for very different types of literature. Section 3 discusses issues related to migration of ETRDL managed repositories to OpenDLib, an advanced digital library service system developed by ISTI-CNR. Data sharing in environmental sciences: A survey of CNR researchers.

Today the free availability of research data is considered an important driver of innovation and of new scientific insights. Due to the increasing amount of data collected as well as to the variety of purposes, process of acquisition and formats this is not an easy task. It implies the development of policies that incentive data curation and preservation, the recognition of the value of research data as "first-class publication", the enforcement of clear rules for open access, copyright and ownership. It is also necessary that the scientific community agree on the development and use of common interoperability standards related to data models, format and exchange protocols. Last but not least it requires that suitable infrastructures be developed at national and international level considering discipline specificity. Projects aiming to develop infrastructures for research data as well as metadata standards that enable data sharing are carried out in many disciplinary and cross-disciplinary fields. Moreover, many surveys are exploring scientists' practices and perceptions toward data acquisition, curation and preservation focusing in particular on perceived barriers and enablers of data sharing. The paper presents a survey based on an online questionnaire submitted to CNR researchers in the area of Environmental Sciences that represent a data intensive, collaborative and multi-disciplinary field. The survey has the aim to explore researchers' attitude in data management, use and sharing, considering practices employed in all phases of data lifecycle as well as needs and requirements that are felt to be crucial for an effective implementation of data preservation. The questionnaire consists of two sections. The first one provides the demographic characteristics of the sample and addresses questions related to the description of the research process carried out in data acquisition and management. This part is based on a common agreed assumption that data life cycle cannot be considered independently from research lifecycle. In the second one a selection of questions already submitted in large-scale international surveys are proposed in order to measure commonality and differences in attitudes as well as in institutional policies.Source: GL14 Fourteenth International Conference on Grey Literature. Metodologia del lavoro (B.I.S.S.M.)

Il contributo descrive la metodologia utilizzata per la realizzazione informatizzata della Bibliofgrafia. Le fasi si sono articolate a partire dall'analisi delle informazioni bibliografiche selezionate e inviatemi dagli studiosi di storia militare nel seguente modo: 1) normalizzazione rispetto alle regole italiane di catalogazione per autori (1979) e identificazione dei campi da indcizzare; 2) acquisizione informatizzata tramite procedure realizzate ad hoc; 3) creazione della base di dati con il sistema RESP sviluppato presso l'IEI; 4) elaborazione e stampa della bibliografia e degli indici. Il risultato del suddetto lavoro è la Bibliografia pubblicata da F.
