Series of Workshops on Digital Library Foundations
Castelli D., Fox E.
This document presents the results of the workshop on "Foundations of Digital Libraries" held in connection with the ACM-IEEE JCDL 2007 Conference in June in Vancouver. The papers presented during the workshop aimed to contribute to laying the foundations for digital libraries as a whole, as well as continuing the work on the definition of a Reference Model for Digital Libraries that was launched by the EU DELOS Network of Excellence on Digital Libraries.Source: D-Lib magazine 13 (2007): 9–10. doi:10.1045/september2007-castelli

Digital Libraries over the Grid: Heaven or Hell?.
Castelli D., Ioannidis Y.
The last decade has seen unprecedented advances in network and distributedsystem technologies, which have opened up the way for the construction of globalscale systems based on completely new conceptions of computation and sharing of resources. The dream of integrating unlimited levels of processing power, unlimited amounts of information, and an unlimited variety of services, and o.ering the entire package in a reliable and seamless fashion to widely distributed users is quickly becoming reality. As Digital Libraries move towards more usercentric, pro-active, collaborative functionality and application diversity, they should be among the first to take advantage of such environments. The long-term vision of the field for creating Dynamic Universal Knowledge Environments calls for intensive computation and processing of very large amounts of information, hence, the needs for the appropriate distributed architecture are pressing.Source: ECDL 2005 - 9th European Conference on Digital Libraries (Vienna, Austria, 18-23 September 2005), pp. 477–478, Vienna, 18-23 September 2005

Digital Library of the future - and the role of libraries
Castelli D.
Digital libraries of the future will give access to a large variety of multimedia and multi-type documents created by integrating content from many different heterogeneous sources that range from repositories of text, images, and audio-video, to scientific data archives, and databases. The digital library will provide a seamless environment where the co-operative access, filtering, manipulation, generation, and preservation of these documents will be supported as a continuous cycle. Users of the library will be both consumers and producers of information, either by themselves or in collaborations with other users. Policy ensuring mechanisms will guarantee that the information produced is visible only to those who have the appropriate rights to access it. The realisation of these new digital libraries requires both the provision of a new technology and a change in the role played by the libraries in the information access-production cycle.Source: Library hi tech 24 (2006): 496–503. doi:10.1108/07378830610715365

Open Archive Solutions to Traditional Archive/Library Cooperation
Castelli D.
The diffusion of Internet is changing the role of archives and libraries and it is opening a wide range of new possibilities. The new vision is that in few years it will be possible to cross-access multiple libraries, archives, museums, and data repositories. The implementation of this revolutionary vision requires the solution of a number of technical, organizational, sociological, and economical issues. Recently, the proposal of a new, low cost technical solution for open repositories of pre-print material, the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting, has greatly stimulated the discussion about these issues in many application frameworks. This paper overviews the status of this discussion in the library and conventional archives frameworks.Source: LIBER quarterly 13 (2003): 290–298.

D4Science - deploying virtual research environments
Castelli D., Michel J.
The D4Science (DIstributed colLaboratories Infrastructure on Grid-ENabled Technology for Science) project aims to continue the path that the GÉANT (a multi-gigabit pan-European data communications network), EGEE (Enabling Grids for E-science in Europe), and DILIGENT (A Digital Library Infrastructure on Grid Enabled Technology) projects have initiated towards establishing networking, Grid-based, and data-centric e-Infrastructures. These e-Infrastructures are expected to accelerate multidisciplinary research by overcoming several crucial barriers that stand in the way, primarily those related to heterogeneity, sustainability and scalability. In order to achieve this objective a D4Science production quality e-Infrastructure has been created, and will be progressively enriched and consolidated. It will provide facilities for creating Virtual Research Environments based on shared computational, data and service resources offered by many different providers like EGEE and large international organizations.Source: ERCIM news online edition 74 (2008).

DL.org - Digital Library Interoperability, best practices and modelling foundations: a common journey to the new frontiers
Castelli D., Parker S.
Mining the vast array of digital content that is being made available offers enormous value for Europe, underpinning the work of cultural, educational and research institutions from diverse disciplines and opening up new windows of opportunity for co-operation on a global scale. This paper discusses how truly effective access to digital data can be maade feasible by interoperable systems, which enable organizations to maximize the value and reuse potential of information, and exchange information across organizational and geographical boundaries to generate new knowledge.Source: D-Lib magazine 15 (2009). doi:10.1045/january2009-inbrief
