SAPIR Publications - D9.3
Rabitti F.
This report presents the result of the SAPIR project in the first year, in terms of scientific publications. According to the DOW, the report describes project activities undertaken during the first year of the project, as part of task T9.3. The activity of publishing papers is considered particularly important for the project since it is both an important way of disseminating project results in the research community and a way of receiving valuable feed-backs. Moreover, for this first report on the project scientific publications, we decided to add a list of papers, published by the project partners before the beginning of the project, which constitute the basis of the project itself.Source: Project report, SAPIR, Deliverable D9.3, 2007

Digital Library Information - Technology Infrastructure
Ioannidis Y., Maier D., Abiteboul S., Buneman P., Davidson S., Fox E., Halevy A., Knoblock C., Rabitti F., Schek H., Weikum G.
This paper charts a research agenda on systems-oriented issues in digital libraries. It focuses on the most central and generic system issues, including system architecture, user-level functionality, and the overall operational environment. With respect to user- level functionality, in particular, it abstracts the overall information lifecycle in digital libraries to five major stages and identifies key research problems that require solution in each stage. Finally, it recommends an explicit set of activities that would help achieve the research goals outlined and identifies several dimensions along which progress of the digital library field can be evaluatedSource: International journal on digital libraries (Print) 5 (2005): 266–274. doi:10.1007/s00799-004-0094-8

Support of multimedia services for distributed network training applications in CORBA-3
Rabitti F.
In this paper, fundamental technological issues in the implementation of today and tomorrow distributed network training systems are outlined. Given their highly distributed nature, the problems inherent to interoperability among heterogeneous systems are discussed. In this respect, the role of CORBA, an emerging standard for application integration technology, is presented. The limitations of today CORBA definition are discussed, and the extension of CORBA-3, with respect to the management of multimedia data (fundamental in the development of the next-generation distributed network training systems), is examined in more detail.Source: 9th DELOS Workshop: Digital Libraries for Distance Learning, pp. 13–19, Brno, Rep. Query processing in PIOS
Rabitti F., Benedetti L., Demi F.
An approach to query processing in object-oriented stores supporting physical data independence is proposed in this Chapter. In particular, the problem of query optimisation (i e finding efficient execution plans for declarative queries) is investigated. A set of rewrite rules has been defined in order to allow an algebraic optimisation phase. A local search procedure, based on a cost model of the store, has been tailored to the task of physical optimisation. To support the physical data independence in the store, a translation algorithm, dealing with the actual storage organisation of the database, has been studied. A comprehensive example illustrates these mechanisms. Finally, performance results are presented.Source: Fully Integrated Data Environments, edited by Atkinson M.P., Welland R. Image database management system. Applied theories, tools and decisions
Stanchev P., Rabitti F.
In this paper we address the problem of building a database system for images (IM_DBMS), in which the images can be accessed by a partial description of the image content. The approach alllows a limited automatic analysis, using ARG techniques and a rule-based system for images belonging to a domain described in advance. The semantic objects, recognized in the images during the analysis process, are interpreted according to the Theory of evidence. The image query processing is based on special access structures generated from the image analysis process.Source: 3rd International Conference on Automatic Image Processing, pp. 208–215, Leipzig, Germany, 8-10/09/1989

GRIM DBMS: a graphical image database management system
Stanchev P., Rabitti F.
Because of the diffusion of graphical editors in different application areas (e.g. business graphics, CAD, multimedia documents, etc.), graphical images are nowadays produced in large amounts. In this paper we address the problem of building a database system for graphical images (GRIM_DBMS), in which the images can be accessed by a partial description of the image content. The approach is based on a limited automatic analysis for images belonging to a domain described in advance to the system. The semantic objects, recognized in the graphical images during the analysis process, are interpreted according to the theory of evidence. The image query processing is based on special access structures generated from the image analysis process. An example demonstrates the main functions of the GRIM_DBMS in a specific application domain.Source: IFIP TC 2/WG 2.6 Working Conference on Visual Database Systems, pp. 415–430, Tokyo, Japan, 3-7/04/1989

A model of authorization for object-oriented and semantic databases
Rabitti F., Woelk D., Kim W.
This paper presents a formal model of authorization for use as the basis for an authorization mechanism in ORION, a prototype database system which directly supports the object-oriented paradigm and a number of semantic data modeling concepts. The model extends in two significant ways the existing models of authorization, which have been designed for database systems supporting the relational, network, or hierarchical models of data. First, it fully develops the concept of implicit authorization, introduced in an earlier paper [FERN75b], to help solve the storage requirement of representing all authorizations in a system by allowing the system to deduce authorizations from explicitly stored authorizations, and to provide a basis for detecting authorization definitions which conflict with existing authorizations. Second, it provides a formal basis for accommodating a number of modeling concepts which the existing models of authorization cannot address: the IS-PART-OF relationship between an object and its containing object, and versions of an object.Source: International Conference on Extending Database Technology (EDBT '88), pp. 231–250, Venice, Italy, 14 - 18 March 1988

Retrieval of multi-media document images in MULTOS
Conti P., Rabitti F.
In this paper we address the problem of retrieving images from large databases of multi-media documents, containing images as components. The queries are specified giving a partial description of the image content. The image analysis process, which is specific for an application domain described in advance to the system, is outlined in the various phases. Images, both pictorial and graphical, are represented using a structural approach and are interpreted according to the theory of evidence. The retrieval process is executed on the access structures generated by the image analysis process.Source: Achievements and impact : Proceedings of the 4th annual ESPRIT conference (ESPRIT '87), pp. 1389–1412, Brussels, Belgium, 1987

An approach to image retrieval from large image databases
Rabitti F., Stanchev P.
In this paper we address the problem of retrieving images from large image databases, giving a partial description of the image content. This approach allows a limited automatic analysis for image belonging to a domain described in advance to the system using a formalism based on fuzzy sets. Reti di comunicazione di calcolatori : concetti e utilizzo
Rabitti F.

Definitions of abstract syntax notation and the office document architecture for the document model
Rabitti F.
The efforts of international organizations such as ISO, ECMA and CCITT are now close to completion. In the context of the project it is necessary to give a formal definition, delivered from the delivered document on the standards, for ASN and ODA. This is necessary in order then to formally define the complete document model.

Electronic document management in office systems
Rabitti F.
This paper summarizes the main aspects concerning the management of electronic documents, that is, documents as they are represented inside the automated office. An electronic document is a multimedia data object which is an aggregation of text, images, attribute, and audio components. A system for the management of electronic documents will be constituted by a number of electronic document servers operating in a network environment together with the user workstations, which are the source of requests concerning document creation, modification and retrieval. Two types of issues are relevant for the management of electronic documents: those relevant to the entire office information system and those concerning only the electronic document server. In the first category the most important issue is the electronic document representation, which make possible interactions between servers and workstations on the ground of these objects and operations on them. The proposed document model makes use of the same structural organizations for document instances, document types and document queries. Conformance to the international standards under developement (ODA) has also been taken in to account. In the second category are included document storage strategies, query processing and access and indexing methods. Considerable attention has been given to flexible retrieval with queries on arbitrary document content rather than keywords or document descriptors. A number of access methods have been evaluated for both text and attributed data.

A model for multimedia documents
Rabitti F.
The problem of a model for representing multimedia documents and supporting operations on documents is addressed. Particular attention is given to the concept of type, since multimedia documents do not fit the static schema definition of database models. A syntax directed approach is proposed for the model. Three levels of specification for a multimedia document are discussed. The layout level describes the document presentation. The logical level describes the document semantic composition. The layout structure and the logical structure are compatible with the Office Document Architecture currently undergoing standardization (ISO, ECMA, CCITT).Source: Office Automation: concepts and tools, edited by Tsichritzis D.C., pp. 227–250.
