A Tutorial on the MILOS Multimedia Content Management System
Amato G, Bolettieri P, Debole F, Falchi F, Gennaro C, Rabitti F, Savino PIn this paper we present the MILOS Multimedia Content Management System. MILOS supports the storage and content based retrieval of any multimedia documents whose descriptions are provided by using arbitrary metadata models represented in XML. It provides developers of digital library applications with functionalities for dealing with heterogeneous digital documents, heterogeneous metadata, and metadata schema mapping. This paper shows how to configure and use all MILOS components.

MILOS Multimedia Content Management System
Rabitti F, Amato G, Savino P, Debole F, Bolettieri P, Falchi FMILOS is a multimedia content management system specialised to support multimedia digital library applications. MILOS provides applications with functionalities for the storage of arbitrary multimedia documents and their content based retrieval using arbitrary metadata models represented in XML. MILOS is flexible in the management of documents containing different types of data and content descriptions; it is efficient and scalable in the storage and content based retrieval of these documents.

Searching and browsing film archives. The European Film Gateway Approach
Debole F, Savino P, Eckes GMetadata describing items in European film archives are very different so that it is difficult to have a uniform access to videos coming from many different archives. These and other relevant issues regarding interoperability among different archives are addressed within the EFG (European Film Gateway) Best Practices Network funded by the European Commission, which aims at enabling Europe's Film Archives and cinématèques to contribute their rich and valuable collections to the EUROPEANA digital library.Project(s): EFG1914

VISIONE Content-Based Video Retrieval System, VBS 2019
Amato G, Bolettieri P, Carrara F, Debole F, Falchi F, Gennaro C, Vadicamo L, Vairo CVISIONE is a content-based video retrieval system that participated to VBS for the very first time in 2019. It is mainly based on state-of-the-art deep learning approaches for visual content analysis and exploits highly efficient indexing techniques to ensure scalability. The system supports query by scene tag, query by object location, query by color sketch, and visual similarity search.

Un catalogo per la descrizione di risorse archeologiche
Aloia N, Debole F, Meghini CThis paper discusses the registry developed by the ARIADNE project for describing the archaeological resources that are made available by the partners of the project for the purposes of discovery, access and integration on a research infrastructure. These resources include: data, services and language resources, such as metadata formats, vocabularies and mappings. The registry is addressed to cultural institutions, private or public, which wish to describe their assets in order to make them known to e-infrastructures.Source: CEUR WORKSHOP PROCEEDINGS, pp. 26-35. Tree Signatures for XML Querying and Navigation
Zezula P, Amato G, Debole F, Rabitti FIn order to accelerate execution of various matching and navigation operations on collections of XML documents, new indexing structure, based on tree signatures, is proposed. We show that XML tree structures can be efficiently represented as ordered sequences of preorder and postorder ranks, on which extended string matching techniques can easily solve the tree matching problem. We also show how to apply tree signatures in query processing and demonstrate that a speedup of up to one order of magnitude can be achieved over the containment join strategy. Other alternatives of using the tree signatures in intelligent XML searching are outlined in the conclusions

A path index for efficient XML path expression processing
Amato G, Debole F, Zezula P, Rabitti FXML is a de fact standard for data representation and exchange on the Internet, therefore storing and querying XML repositories has become an important issue. Several XML query languages are based on the use path expressions containing optional wildcards. This poses a new problem, given that traditional query processing approaches have been proven not to be efficient in this case. We proposed a new path index to efficiently process path expressionswith wildcards on XML data. Extensive evaluation confirms better performance with respect to other techniques proposed in the literature. An extension of the proposed technique to deal with the content of XML documents in addition to their structure is also discussed.

Using MILOS to build an on-line photo album: the PhotoBook
Amato G, Bolettieri P, Debole F, Falchi F, Rabitti F, Savino PBuilding new digital library applications requires a developement platform that offers standard and powerful building blocks to support application developers. In this paper we discuss our experience of using MILOS, a multimedia content management system oriented to the construction of digital libraries, to build a demanding application dedicated to non-professional users. Specifically, we discuss the design and implementation of an on-line photo album (PhotoBook), which is a digital library application that allows people to manage their own photos, to share them with friends, and to make them publicly available and searchable.

Multilingual search for cultural heritage archives via combining multiple translation resource
Jones G, Zhang Y, Newman E, Fantino F, Debole FThe linguistic features of material in Cultural Heritage (CH) archives may be in various languages requiring a facility for effective multilingual search. The specialised language often associated with CH content introduces problems for automatic translation to support search applications. The MultiMatch project is focused on enabling users to interact with CH content across different media types and languages. We present results from a MultiMatch study exploring various translation techniques for the CH domain. Our experiments examine translation techniques for the English language CLEF 2006 Cross-Language Speech Retrieval (CL-SR) task using Spanish, French and German queries. Results compare effectiveness of our query translation against a monolingual baseline and show improvement when combining a domain-speci c translation lexicon with a standard machine translation system.

MultiMatch: Multiple Access to Cultural Heritage
Amato G, Debole F, Peters C, Savino POur shared cultural heritage (CH) is an essential part of our European identity, transcending cultural and language barriers. The aim of the MultiMatch project is to enable users to explore and interact with online internet-accessible CH content, across media types and language boundaries, in ways that do justice to the multitude of existing perspec- tives. This has been achieved through the development of a search en- gine targeted for the access, organisation and personalized presentation of large and complex cultural heritage information. Metadata Editor
Debole F, Savino P, Caruso E MThe Metadata Editor (ME) is a tool providing an easy way to create XML metadata by using a simple web interface. The ME is fully customizable both in terms of the metadata schema used, of the DBMS adopted to store metadata instances and to executed content-based searches, and of the end user interface since the forms used for the creation of new metadata are configurable just editing an XML configuration file. The ME allows users to create, search and edit metadata records. It also supports the use of controlled vocabularies for the different metadata elements. Currently, the ME has been used in EU funded project and in a Italian Regional Project.
