Deploying general-purpose virtual research environments for humanities research
Blanke T., Candela L., Hedges M., Priddy M., Simeoni F.
Several virtual research environments (VREs) have been developed to address specific tasks or application domains. Building on the experiences and use cases coming out of these projects, this paper addresses the creation of more general-purpose VREs for the humanities, which move beyond specific, focused tasks, and instead provide services and environments that support more general-purpose humanities research activities. Specifically, we are investigating use cases related to the organization and integration of the dispersed and heterogeneous information on which such research is based. These use cases are highly interactive, interpretative and researcher centric, addressing topics such as annotation environments and support for 'active-reading' processes and scholarly dialogues. We present the background to our work and the technical approach taken, and report the results obtained so far.Source: Philosophical transactions - Royal Society. Report on the First DL.org Workshop on digital library interoperability, best practices and modelling foundations
Innocenti P., Toli E., Candela L.
The document is the report on the 1st Workshop on Digital Library Interoperability, Best Practices and Modelling Foundations was held in Corfu, Greece on October 1, 2009, in conjunction with the 13th European Conference on Digital Libraries (ECDL2009). The event was dedicated to discuss top-level challenges and priorities for investigating and achieving digital library (DL) interoperability, to analyse the current state of the art and to deliberate top priorities towards global DL infrastructures. Talks included first achievement reports and visions on the six thematic groups of the EU-funded DL.org project, and a brief overview of the DELOS Reference Model for Digital Libraries, the conceptual framework of DL.org. An interactive panel discussion completed the workshop.Source: D-Lib magazine 15 (2009): 3–9. doi:10.1045/november2009-innocenti

D4SCIENCE-II - VOs and VREs operation activity report
Panagiota K., Candela L., Kakaletris G.
One of the objectives of the D4Science-II project is to serve very different and challenging scientific scenarios by providing the communities involved in them with innovative research environments. These environments will materialise in (i) a set of Virtual Research Environments, i.e. virtual laboratories providing the community they are conceived for with the set of data sources and facilities needed to accomplish their research tasks, and (ii) a set of Virtual Organisations, i.e. organised pool of actors and resources of various genre supporting an highly controlled sharing toward the building of Virtual Research Environments. This deliverable document the activities performed to satisfy the requirements of each available Virtual Organization and Virtual Research Environment so as to lead to a fully functional environment which offers all the available functional provided by the D4Science system.Source: Project report, D4SCIENCE-II, Deliverable DSA2.2, 2010

D4SCIENCE-II - Report on Scenario Specific Technology Development
Candela L., Kakaletris G., Papanikos G.
D4Science II project aims to serve a set of different scientific communities under five (5) pre-identified scenarios, that consist of a set of users, applications and resources. In order for these scenarios to be realised on an interoperating eInfrastructures landscape, case-specific software implementation is required. This implementation is targeting (a) the migration or full implementation of applications that reside on the "outer" infrastructures in the new landscape and (b) the implementation of new functionality on gCube in order for the latter to cope with user requirements coming from NA5 tasks. The progress of the design and implementation of these components is being reported in this deliverable, which has the form of an on-line document produced by the processing of the thread of tickets managed in the TRAC system of the project that relate to the JRA2 tasksSource: Project report, D4SCIENCE-II, Deliverable DJRA2.1, 2010

EUBRAZILOPENBIO - Software platform extensions
Candela L.
D3.4 'EUBrazilOpenBio Software Platform Extensions' consists of the collection of software artifacts that will be produced during the project timeframe. These software artifacts include mediators interfacing with species data repositories (e.g. speciesLink, OBIS) for discovery purposes and mediators interfacing with cloud 'infrastructures' for executing niche modeling related tasks. These software artifacts together with the other software artifacts resulting from WP3 (Deliverables D3.2 'EUBrazilOpenBio Software Platform Core' and D3.3 'Niche Modeling Services') will realize the EUBrazilOpenBio Software Platform.According to what is presented in D3.1 'Development Planning and Coordination', the whole software development activity is continuous and governed by a flexible, agile-based development methodology, meaning that software is produced through a number of subsequent yet short software development lifecycles.Source: Project report, EUBRAZILOPENBIO, Deliverable D3.4, 2012
