These Working Notes contain descriptions of the experiments conducted within CLEF 2006 organised by the Cross-Language evaluation Forum. The final papers - revised and extended as a result of the discussions at the Workshop - together with a comparative analysis of the results will appear in the CLEF 2006 Proceedings, to be published by Springer in their Lecture Notes for Computer Science series. CLEF organises a series of evaluation tracks designed to test different aspects of mono- and cross-language information retrieval system development. The intention is to encourage systems to move from monolingual text retrieval to the implementation of a full multilingual multimedia search service.

DL.org: Coordination Action on Digital Library Interoperability, Best Practices, and Modelling Foundations

The goal of the DL.org project is to create a framework where key representatives from major initiatives and on-going Digital Library related projects may collaborate, discuss experiences, exchange expertise, work on interoperability of their solutions, promote shared standards, and provide the DL community with a deeper understanding of key issues and new directions. The ultimate objective will rapidly advance research and development techniques thus facilitating the creation of a European Information Space. In using the DELOS Digital Library Reference Model as its conceptual and operational basis, the project will be making an innovative attempt to achieve the above and obtain concrete and novel results that are much broader and further reaching than any other similar effort in the past. DL.org will be active at a crucial time by executing coordination actions that target the essence of integration amongst a series of many DL efforts that are currently on-going, each one acting in isolation and adopting ad-hoc solutions and methodologies. The main instrument of the project to promote interoperability among all relevant efforts consists of six thematic Working Groups composed by DL.org partners and representatives from prominent DL projects and organisations.

The demand for powerful and rich Digital Libraries able to support a large variety of interdisciplinary activities as well as the data deluge the information society is confronted with nowadays has increased the need for "building by re-use" and "sharing". Interoperability is a central issue to satisfy these needs. Despite its importance, and the many attempts to address it done in the past, the solutions to this problem are today, however, still very limited. Main reasons for this slow progress are lack of any systematic approach for addressing the issue and scarce knowledge of the adopted solutions. Too often these remain confined to the systems they have been designed for. In order to overcome this lack, DL.org promotes the production of this document with the goal to collect and describe a portfolio of best practices and pattern solutions to common issues faced when developing large-scale interoperable Digital Library systems. EFG - European Film Gateway

With the support of ACE (Association des Cinémathèques Européennes) and the EDL Foundation, the EFG Best Practice Network aims at finding and implementing solutions for providing integrated access to the wealth of Europes cinematographic heritage. To date, digitised collections of moving images and cinema-related material are dispersed, lacking the possibility of domain-specific search and access across the various repositories, institutions and countries. Considerable challenges exist in several fields: The problem of lacking coherence in digitisation practice and metadata standards across the film archives and cinémathèques has to be tackled in order to provide for the basic technical and semantic preconditions for integrated access. Furthermore, the solving of IPR issues is crucial for providing access to both digitised moving images and cinema-related material. Both challenges can only be met in a collaborative way by building a network of film institutions around the actual task of providing integrated access to federated digital repositories. EFG specifically addresses the issues of IPR management, digitisation best practices and technical and semantic interoperability. Best practices and standards will be adapted and promoted in each of these three fields. The publicly visible result will be an internet platform providing advanced search facilities and access to federated digital collections.
