Fast tetrahedron-tetrahedron overlap algorithm
Ganovelli F., Ponchio F., Rocchini C.
We present an algorithm to test two tetrahedra for overlap. The algorithm is based on a dimension reduction technique that allows to apply the Separating Axis Theorem avoiding part of the computation needed to perform the Separating Axis Test. Visual Computing Library
Paolo Cignoni, Fabio Ganovelli

Visualization and 3D data processing in David's restoration
Callieri M., Cignoni P., Ganovelli F., Impoco G., Montani C., Pingi P., Ponchio F., Scopigno R.
The David restoration project (started in Florence in 2002) has given several guidelines to the definition and development of innovative solutions to process and visualize 3D data in the framework of Cultural Heritage (CH) applications. Our main goal has been to demonstrate the usefulness of digital 3D models and of visualization tools in the framework of a restoration project.Source: ISTI Technical reports, 2003

Curvature from sliding
Ganovelli F., Cignoni P., Scopigno R.
We introduce a novel interpretation of the curvature over discrete surfaces that allows to compute a multi scale measure of principal directions and values of curvature and which is robust with regards to tessellation degeneracies and geometric and topological noise. The key observation is that there is a direct relation between the way a portion of surface can rotationally slide over a surface and the directions of principal curvature. We exploit such relation to setup a optimization problem that we use to actually compute the curvature values in a novel way.Source: ISTI Technical reports, 2009

OCME: out-of-core Mesh Editing Made Practical
Ganovelli F., Scopigno R.
OCME (Out-of-Core Mesh Editing) comprises a novel data structure and related algorithms for out-of-core editing of large meshes. Triangles are inserted in a multigrid on the basis of their size in average constant time. OCME maintains no explicit hierarchy, so inserting, modifying, or deleting data doesn't require costly refitting.Source: IEEE computer graphics and applications 32 (2012): 46–58. doi:10.1109/MCG.2011.49

Enabling cuts on multiresolution representation
Ganovelli F., Cignoni P., Montani C., Scopigno R.
Multiresolution representations are widely used in many visualization contexts and applications, since they provide optimal management of the data representation by using at each time instant a level of detail most appropriate for the application requirements. Unfortunately, current solutions do not allow the topology of the object to be changed, and this tends to prevent its adoption in applications where topological changes are needed, such as virtual surgery applications. By extending a known multiresolution model based on simplicial complexes, we develop a new approach which supports dynamic topological modifications of the represented object without greatly increasing the representation complexity.Source: The visual computer 17 (2001): 274–286. doi:10.1007/s003710100098

A machine vision system controlling the cutting of animal hide
Fantini E., Ganovelli F., Pingi P.
Based on the integration of image acquisition techniques and real-time systems, an innovative system for cutting raw hides has been developed at ISTI-CNR. The aim is to partly automate the cutting process, so that minimal human intervention is needed. The current procedure for cutting animal hide is completely manual. The hide is spread out on a bench and expert operators decide the best cutting lines on the basis of the location of specific features. The hide is then manually cut using ad hoc knives and the parts are removed from the bench. The work of cutting the hide is the most time consuming step, and requires three or four workers.Source: ERCIM news 55 (2003): 32–33.

Batching meshes for high performance terrain visualization
Cignoni P., Ganovelli F., Gobbetti E., Marton F., Ponchio F., Scopigno R.
This paper describes an efficient technique for out-of-core rendering and management of large textured terrain surfaces. The technique, called Batched Dynamic Adaptive Meshes (BDAM) , is based on a paired tree structure: a tiled quadtree for texture data and a pair of bintrees of small triangular patches for the geometry. These small patches are TINs and are constructed and optimized off-line with high quality simplification and tristripping algorithms. Hierarchical view frustum culling and view-dependent texture and geometry refinement is performed at each frame through a stateless traversal algorithm. datasets.Source: Second Annual Conference of Eurographics - Italian Chapter, Milano, 25-26 settembre 2003

Animating cuts with on-the-fly re-meshing
Ganovelli F., Òsullivan C.
The problem of defining a model for deformable objects which allows the user to perform cuts is still open. Generally speaking, the reason is that such a task affects the connectivity and the topology of the mesh, while the assumption that they never change is the basis of most algorithms for both computation of deformation and collision detection. The drawback of approaching this problem as one of cutting based on re-meshing, is that the mesh exhibits a higher density where it has been cut than elsewhere. This paper proposes an on-the-fly tetrahedral simplification scheme to cope with such a fragmentation problem.Source: The European Association for Computer Graphics - 22nd Annual Conference EUROGRAPHICS, pp. 243–247, Manchester (UK), 4-7/09/2001

A robust method for real-time thread simulation
Kubiak B., Pietroni N., Ganovelli F., Fratarcangeli M.
We present a physically based model for real-time simulation of thread dynamics. Our model captures all the relevant aspects of the physics of the thread, including quasi-zero elasticit, bending, torsion and self-collision, and it provides output forces for the haptic feedback. The physical properties are modeled in terms of constraints that are iteratively satisfied while the numerical integration is carried out through a Verlet scheme. This approach leads to an unconditionally stable, controllable and computationally light simulation. Our results demonstrate the effectiveness of our model, showing the interaction of the thread with other objects in real time and the creation of complex knots.Source: ACM Symposium on Virtual Reality Software and Technology 2007.
